About the farm
Pablo Andres Guerrero, the producer of El Obraje, inherited his father’s farm located in Tangua, south part of Nariño in Colombia. For a very long time it used to be a region renowned for growing cereals of different kinds. Due to the government imports of cereals, they had to find other ways to replace these crops. Finally, in the early 2000’s, they started with coffee production in a region where coffee was not traditionally produced. For many years, they had to sell their harvest to the local cooperative until the transition to the production of high quality coffees started in 2010, giving to El Obraje coffee farm several recognitions internationally.
El Obraje is located around 2200 masl, with coffee planted on the slopes descending to a river valley. The nearly 100-hectare estate now cultivates coffee on only 25 hectares; the rest of the land has been converted into a natural forest reserve by Pablo. By 2009, he had built a facility to process his own coffee and entered the specialty coffee market. In 2011, Pablo brought Gesha seeds to El Obraje from Panama, starting with 2,000 trees. Four years later he planted another 7,000 trees.
The climate and terroir of El Obraje are major contributing factors to its coffee’s unique cup profile. Temperatures vary greatly in a day. It is located near many volcanic mountains and the rocky soil is filled with minerals.
